William Allen Wallace diaries, 1854 Aug 25-1858 Apr 1.

Holograph manuscript diaries written by William A. Wallace while living in Los Angeles, California, and during visits to his family in New England. The diaries contain detailed entries concerning political events in California, Wallace's involvement in Democratic and Republican politics as editor of the Los Angeles Star, the issue of slavery, frontier life, and crime and justice among settlers. Wallace also discusses social life in Los Angeles and his impressions of travel in California. The diaries contain newspaper clippings, many possibly from the Los Angeles Star, including an article titled, "Olive Oatman, Apache Captive," based on an interview with Oatman. Also present are clippings from the Daily Alta California, with corrections in manuscript, including articles signed, "Yo Mismo," many written by Wallace as a correspondent from Los Angeles. Each diary contains a chronological list of letters written by Wallace.

William Allen Wallace was born in 1815 in Pembroke, New Hampshire, and moved with his family to Canaan, New Hampshire, in 1817. In 1850, he went to California, where he worked as a gold miner, schoolteacher, and newspaper editor. He was editor and proprietor of the Los Angeles Star during 1853-1856, and in 1857 became a correspondent for San Francisco's Daily Alta California, reporting on travels in the West and from Washington, D.C., during the Civil War.
